The process of enrollment and reenrollment continues. The SMT (School Ministry Team), the school staff, the PTO (Parent Teachers Organization), and the Pastors are committed to offering a quality environment for our students. ü       A sports program that provides team experience for all 5-8th graders?

ü       Extra-curricular activities?

ü       Choirs and Hand Bells?

ü       A daily walk with Jesus that builds a faith foundation for life?

ü       A dedicated Science Lab for all classes?

ü       A music program in all grades?

ü       Art experiences through Arts Attack and FAME?

ü       A community where everyone is known and valued?

TRACK MEET

The All-Lutheran Schools Track Meet is hosted by Prince of Peace on Saturday, May 10 at Newark Memorial High School’s track. That means we need LOTS of workers!

If you are a participant you will receive information about your events and times from the track coaches.

We need parents to help with events and help in the all-day snack bar. NOW is the time to accumulate Parent Participation hours. SIGN UP in the school office TODAY!

WASHINGTON D.C. EDUCATIONAL TRIP

If you missed the information meeting you can still get information from the school office. Information packets outline the program information, dates, and cost. The early bird registration deadline is June 1.  Students pay the 2008 prices for 2009 travel when you register for the 2009 program by June 1.

One of the sites that the students will see on their trip to Washington D.C. is the National World War II Memorial. The Memorial is one of the newest memorials on the national Mall in Washington, D.C. In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed a committee to help select the location and design and raise funds for a new World War II Monument. The design for the memorial was opened to the public with a nationwide competition, which drew over 600 submissions. Construction began in 2001 and the memorial was opened to the public on April 29, 2004.

OPEN HOUSE MAY 7

On Wednesday, May 7 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. classroom will be open with the different grades offering something for everyone to enjoy. There will be art work on display, favorites from the third graders, Family History in the fourth grade, and State Projects in grade five. The Science Lab will be open with Science displays. The Jr. High will be displaying some of their power point projects in the Computer lab. Student will be on hand to answer your questions.

Invite a friend or neighbor to visit the school. We are proud of our school and want to show it off!

CAN YOU PLAY BEETHOVEN?

If so, the FAME program has a role for you in the 6th and last lesson of this school year on Friday, May 16. The featured compositions are Beethoven’s 5th and 9th Symphonies and Fur Elise. Other pieces can be worked in, even if only 30 seconds long! The students love seeing peers and parents perform, so call FAME coordinator, Georgene Martin at 794-5237 before May 8 to plan your appearance time/s and then, start practicing.

Changes for the next school year: we are hoping to be able to add a second Kindergarten class. We are close to a full waiting list that guarantees the number to start a second class. If that happens, there will be some shifts in locations of class rooms. There are exciting things to watch for. We are interviewing for a fifth grade teacher. We will continue with a sign language curriculum in Kindergarten and 1st grade; science labs under the guidance of Miss Hart and the classroom teachers; music and computer labs will be continued; an addition to the reading curriculum that includes an assessment of reading levels and differentiated instruction; departmental meetings of teachers to coordinate instruction, discipline, and schedules; organized sports in grades 5-8; an opportunity for the seventh and eighth graders to take an educational tour of Washington D. C., and a possible return to Portland for the various tournaments. The training and use of Love & Logic will continue in all the classrooms.

Prince of Peace has strived to put a preeminent emphasis on the spiritual and academic training of our students. We hold of great importance our responsibility to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to our students. God “wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth”. 1 Timothy 2:4.  Prince of Peace also values our strong academic programs in grades K-8. Along with our programs is a desire to train a child through the knowledge of rules and consequences. At the beginning of this year we began a renewed emphasis on behavior and pride in Prince of Peace and what it means to be a valued part of the Prince of Peace family.

Your commitment is very important. I am asking you to help in one area of the planning process for the 2008-2009 school year. Please let the school office know if you plan on re-enrolling for the next school year. Planning for staffing and important programs depend on enrollment figures. If you haven’t re-enrolled, may I ask you to make an early decision. If you have any questions see Lisa in the school office or make an appointment to meet with me. It concerns me to hear of families who have reenrollment questions and anxieties and don’t come to me for answers, clarification, or information about the upcoming year.

Reminder: If you want to apply for Financial Aid and/or a Technology Grant for the 2008-2009 school year, please get the forms from the school office and return them by

April 15. A committee of School Ministry Team members and the Principal meet to assign the grants in mid-May. If we can assist your remaining at POP, we’d love to do that!

2007-08 Theme:

Chosen, Gifted, Empowered

The logo for the 2007-2008 school year features three crosses illuminated by a shining sun. The Biblical basis for the words Chosen, Gifted, Empowered is found in the first chapter of the book of Ephesians in the New Testament.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Prince of Peace Lutheran School. From the beginning three crosses were an identifiable symbol of our school. The towering crosses, where the Fellowship Hall now stands, were a reflection of our faith. Prince of Peace was founded as a mission arm of the church so everyone would come to know what God had done for all believers. He has Chosen us before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). He has Gifted us with wisdom (Ephesians 1: 8-9) and Empowered us to move forward secure in the knowledge of our salvation (Ephesians 1:18-19).

The Pastors, administration, and the staff of Prince of Peace pray that your experiences this year will be joyful ones filled with academic, physical, and spiritual growth. Celebrate with us as we honor 50 years of commitment to the church and the community and move forward confident in our programs, our curriculum and our firm foundation in the Word of God.
